PORTMANTEAU (Lucian Freud)
Sunny Morning Eight Legs (detail), 1997 oil on canvas
This dog was among the most beautifully painted passages in the show i recently saw at the Modern in Fort Worth. This is a good photo, but can’t show the lusciousness of that lavender among the yellows or the grey around the dog’s mouth, slack in sleep. You can see how it is painted with Freud’s signature contour swirls invented on flesh, but never giving up the texture he used to get with a painstaking stroke for every fur hair.
